How do ballerinas get their hair in a bun and make it stay for the whole dance?

I have a ballet recital coming up in June, and I want to know how I can get my bun to stay. Bobby pins? Hair spray? ANY tips will be very much appreciated.

Just to clarify what they said about hair nets - the net is not supposed to go over your whole head. It only goes over the bun. It is big enough to cover your whole head, eys, but you only put it over the bun and twist it as you would twist the ponytail elastic. Hairnets come in various colors and can be made practically invisible on you bun.

I use a lot of strong hold gel to make it slick, then put it in a ponytail, then I twist the ponytail around its base and wrap it around the base several times. Then I use hairpins to secure it, then I put the net on, secure the net with more pins. After the gel dries I add Aquanet hairspray for extra security.

they put it in a pony tail then rap it around and put a hair net and bobby pins in it. There is also some thing called hairogami which makes buns better and look nicer u can by it on e bay.

I always pulled it back tight, used lots of hair spray, and then bobby pinned everything. Never had any problems with stray hair.

gel. LOTS of gel. i have fairly short hair and once ive got it in a pony tail i plait it. i know... its too short it wont work but the gel makes it stick.wrap it around and secure with TWO types of bobbly pins. normal ones and special bun bobby pins which you should be able to get from any supermarket. you said not to suggest a hairnet but i dont think you got what the others meant.

Alot of this is going to depend on the length and cut of your hair.

There is a haircare product actually called "stiff stuff" I couldn't ever get my hair to stay back until I tried this. HOWEVER, you will need to really wash it out.

So, put gel in as you are pulling it into your hands to make your ponytail. Make it tight. Put in the stiff stuff and pin your bun. Makes sure your bobbypins go into the center and in from different directions. Try it out BEFORE recital though and get used to it.

We always use gel to slick our hair back and lots of bobby pins. I have done buns with and without hair nets. Hair nets are the best, but it is possible to do it without. You just need many bobby pins. Also, I have seen dancers use what they call hair glue, it looks like a glue stick and works wonderfully at keeping stray hairs down.

Snowflake is right. As you twist the hairnet, you layer it back and forth over your bun for more coverage. By matching the color of the net to your hair, it completely blends in visually. By using a net, you have the most assurance that bobby pins stay in because centrifugal force can't pull your twirled hair apart while dancing. I would also like to add that you can further braid your ponytail in order to keep strands locked tight. Finish with lots of hair spray.
